什么是基因动物？就是把一些人类所需要的基因，转导到动物体内，使培养出的这种动物，能够生产出一些人类所需要的物质，这种动物叫基因动物。例如，人的生长激素，能够刺激人体长身体，增加身高，是一种很好的治疗侏儒症的药品。用引入基因的方法，培养出一种特殊的小鼠，在这种小鼠的奶液里，含有人类的生长激素，而且含量可以很高，一升小鼠奶可以提取0.5克人的生长激素。科学家们研究把基因转入动物的主要目的之一，就是利用养殖动物来生产一些贵重药品。各国科学家，已经把几十种基因转入动物，除小鼠外，还有小兔、猪、绵羊等，使这些动物生产胰岛素、乙型肝炎抗原等药品，但目前产量太低，无法投入应用，预计到20世纪末或21世纪初将会大量应用。
研究基因动物的另一个重要目的，是培育长得快、个头大、抗病能力又强的动物品种。基因鸡，有生大鸡蛋的鸡，有光长肉的鸡；基因羊，有羊毛又长又白的品种，也有肉嫩快长的品种；基因鱼，有美丽的观赏鱼，也有味道鲜美的美味鱼；还有高产的基因奶牛，肥硕的基因肉牛……。21世纪的基因动物将遍布人们的养殖场。
