当人们足跟离地以脚尖站立时，在足跟与小腿之间有一条很粗壮结实、绷得很紧的肌腱，这就是跟腱。它是由起于胫骨后面的比目鱼肌与起于股骨内外髁的腓肠肌的两块肌肉的肌腱联合而成，是人体最强有力的肌腱之一。人的行走、跑、跳就依仗着这条强有力的肌腱。跟腱若是完全断了就会寸步难行。
跟腱长约15cm，是人体最粗大的肌腱，由小腿三头肌(比目鱼肌、腓肠肌内、外头)肌腱在足跟上方约15cm处融合形成。在体表形成明显的条状突起。跟腱的主要功能是屈小腿和足跖屈，人能够跳跃起来，能够蹬地跑起来，靠的都是它。此外，跟腱还影响人的直立。
跟腱断裂可分为两类：一类是自发性断裂，常见于运动员和演员；一类是外伤，通常伴有皮肤的损伤或骨折。
