研究生物体形态结构及其发生发展的科学。根据研究对象不同，有人体解剖学、家畜解剖学、比较解剖学等分支，其中以人体解剖学的研究最为深入详尽。一般所称之解剖学即指人体解剖学。人体解剖学有悠久的历史。中国公元前500年的医书《内经》中即有人体解剖的资料记载。公元前400年，亚里士多德曾进行过较详细的动物解剖。16世纪，维萨里解剖尸体并用肉眼观察了人体器官的形态构造，著成《人体的构造》一书，纠正了前人的一些错误，开创了现代解剖学。19世纪末以来由于科学技术的发展，X线透视、B型超声图、电子计算机图形处理、同位素示踪、荧光免疫、冰冻蚀刻等新技术的运用，将解剖学的研究推进到了一个新水平。
解剖学的发展与生产实践和医疗实践密切相关，同时也推动着生产和医疗的发展。如表面解剖学的兴起推动了对人体体表形态与深部结构对应关系的研究，也为从体表“望、扪”诊查或处理内部器官疾病提供了理论根据。临床医学的发展要求对器官内部形态结构如肺内支氯管的安排、肝内管道的配布等有较详尽的了解，因而掀起对肺段、肝段、肾段的深入研究，进而也使肺、肝、肾等外科手术有了大步前进。解剖学的研究也是分类学、人类学、法医学等研究的基础。在经济建设中，在规划和设计中国的民用工业和国防工业上都需要中国人民自己的体质常数和标准作参考，这也要求通过对人群作解剖学的调查研究来提供。
