惠德贝岛级是美国海军新建的一级船坞登陆舰,从1985年首舰服役,至今已服役 ll艘,还有 l艘在建。&127;其主要任务是运送两栖登陆作战兵力。1990年底,首制舰惠德贝岛号就被派往海湾,执行运送海军陆战队的任务。
惠德贝岛级舰的满载排水量 15726吨,但第九艘一十二艘的排水量增至 16740吨。舰长 185.6米,宽 25.6米,吃水 6.3米;&127;动力装置为 4台柴油机,37440马力;航速 23节,续航力 8000&127;海里/18节;人员 340名,另外还为运送的 450名陆战队员设置了床位。
该级舰的特点是坞舱巨大,长 134米,约占舰全长的3/4,宽 15米,可装运 9艘 lcac气垫登陆艇和 21艘 lcm型螺旋桨推进的机动登陆艇。其中 lcac可装载 2辆大型坦克或10辆装甲运兵车,lcm则可装l辆 m60坦克或 60吨军用物资。该级舰压载水舱设置在艉部和坞舱两侧的舷墙内,为缩短压载水的排放时间,排放时可同时采用压缩空气和排放水泵这两种方法。
惠德贝岛级舰的武器装备极少,只有几座舰炮;此外,踞部的直升机起降甲板上可停放ch-53重型直升机和 av-8b鹞式飞机。
