【来源】
为葫芦科植物西瓜的果皮。植物形态详"西瓜"条。
【采集】
夏季收集西瓜皮，削去内层柔软部分，洗净，晒干。也有将外面青皮削去，仅取其中间部分者。
【药材】
干燥的果皮，薄而卷曲，成筒状或不规则形，大小不一，外表黄绿色至黑棕色；内表面有网状的维管束线纹。质脆，易折碎。除去外层青皮者，呈不规则的条块状，皱缩而常卷曲，表面灰黄色，有明显皱纹及网状维管束。气微，味淡。以干燥、皮薄、外面青绿色、内面近白色者为佳。 全国各地均产。

含蜡质、糖分及灰分(约10%)
【性味】
①《纲目》："甘，凉，无毒。" ②《饮片新参》："淡平微苦。"
【归经】
《四川中药志》："入脾、胃二经。"
【功用主治】
清暑解热，止渴，利小便。治暑热烦渴，小便短少，水肿，口舌生疮。 ①《丹溪心法》："治口疮甚者，西瓜皮烧灰敷之。" ②《要药分剂》："能解皮肤间热。" ③《本草再新》："能化热除烦，去风利湿。" ④《随息居饮食谱》："凉惊涤暑。" ⑤《饮片新参》："清透暑热，养胃津。" ⑥《现代实用中药》："为利尿剂。治肾脏炎浮肿，糖尿病，黄疸。并能解酒毒。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，0.3～1两；或焙干研末。外用：烧存性研末撒。
【宜忌】
中寒湿盛者忌用。
【选方】
①治肾脏炎，水肿：西瓜皮(须用连髓之厚皮，晒干者入药为佳，若中药店习用之"西瓜翠衣"则无著效；干者一两三钱，白茅根鲜者二两。水煎，一日三回分服。(《现代实用中药》) ②治闪挫腰疼，不能屈伸者：西瓜青为片，阴干为细末，以盐酒调，空心服。(《摄生众妙方》) ③治牙痛：经霜西瓜皮烧灰，敷患处牙缝内。(《本草汇言》)
