位于半导体表面禁带内的表面态（或称表面能级）与体内深能级一样可作为复合中心，起着对载流子的复合作用。为此，通常把半导体非平衡载流子通过表面态发生复合的过程称为表面复合。与体复合相比表面复合更为复杂，它不仅依赖于表面复合中心浓度及体掺杂浓度，还依赖于表面势。而表面势又是对周围环境敏感的参量，所以表面复合会因表面环境条件的变化而发生变化。半导体器件通常都要求较低且稳定的表面复合速度，因此，在半导体工艺技术上如何控制表面复合是一个非常重要的问题。
