| 湘西土家族苗族自治州 位于中国湖南省西北部。辖吉首市和泸溪、凤凰、花垣、保靖、古丈、永顺、龙山7县。人口212.82万。土家族主要聚居西北部，苗族主要聚居南部，并有汉、白、瑶、壮、侗等族。1957年成立湘西土家族苗族自治州。吉首县于1981年改市，为自治州首府。自治州处高山深谷地带，气候垂直变化明显，自然资源丰富。主属亚热带常绿阔叶林区，植被类型多样，植物种类繁多，具有重要经济价值的用材、油脂、纤维、饮料、淀粉、鲜果和药用植物近200种，成片的原始次生林中保存有水杉、珙桐、银杏等古老树种。野生动物种类繁多，有金丝猴、猕猴、鼯鼠、麝、大鲵等珍稀动物。草场面积广阔，野生饲草丰富。河溪落差大，水力资源丰富 。矿藏有汞、锰、铝、铅、锌、煤、磷等。林业占重要经济地位，林地占土地总面积的75％，森林覆盖率35％，用材林有松、杉、樟等，经济林有油桐、茶、油茶等，盛产五倍子 、黄连等中药材。农作物以水稻、玉米、甘薯为主。烟草种植普遍。饲养猪、牛、羊为传统副业。湘西黄牛、武陵黑猪为良种。工业有电子、采矿、机械等。第二次国内革命战争时期，龙山、永顺等县是湘鄂川黔革命根据地的中心，湘鄂川黔省革命委员会旧址犹存。永顺猛峒河一带为著名自然风景区。古迹有永顺玉村溪州铜柱和凤凰黄丝桥古城等。 |
