菊科甜叶菊属的 1种。为多年生草本植物。原产南美巴拉圭和巴西,世界部分地区有引种栽培,中国已有引种。叶对生,头状花序全部为两性,白色,叶含糖苷,提取的双萜配糖体结晶物,其甜度为蔗糖的300倍,是食品工业的重要甜味剂。由于甜叶菊具有高甜度和低热量的特点,可以用于医药,作为肥胖症、低血糖、高血压症及糖尿病患者的非热性甜味剂。甜叶菊是一种浅根系植物,性喜潮湿,有较强的抗寒性,能忍耐-12℃的低温,但抗旱性较差。最适宜的生长温度是20~25℃。它又是一种短日照植物,在北方种植必须进行短日照处理才能收获种子。繁殖方法有种子繁育、扦插和分株繁育。扦插容易生根。
