Occurrence and control of desert shrub pests in Alxa region of Inner Mongolia;

The three big ecological barriers situated in Alxa region were ever the important ecology defence-line of the Northwest China, but their sheltering function has degenerated due to vegetation degradation resulted from the zero-runoff of the Heihe river, lasting aridity of climate and the over-utilization to forest steppe.

The variation characteristics of vegetation and their relationship with climate change in Alxa region from 1982 to 2003 were studied by using the GIMMS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) data and meteorological records from Alxa Left Banner,Alxa Right Banner and Ejin Banner in order to find out the regional response of the vegetation to the global change.

The diversity and species component of small mammal communities were measured with trap-day method in Alashan region of Inner Mongolia from August to September 1998 and 1999, and in October 2002.

Based on the observed duststorm data in Alashan region of Inner Mongolia from 1961 to 2000, the climatic characteristics of duststorm in this region was analyzed, especially the geographical distribution and seasonal, interannual and interdecadal characteristics.
