所考察的系统状态变量均保持不变的一种状态。实际系统总受到不同程度的扰动（摄动），只有受到一定程度的扰动后能回复到平衡态的状态才能被观察到。这种状态是稳定的平衡态。狭义的平衡态指稳定的平衡态。在力学系统中，若以坐标和动量为状态变量，则静止是平衡态。例如单摆静止地处于最高位置或最低位置都是平衡态。前者不稳定，而后者稳定是狭义的平衡态。又如在由大量气体分子组成的系统中，通常用温度和压强等力学量作为状态变量。尽管各个分子作布朗运动，只要温度和压强均为常量，系统就处于平衡态。平衡态的例子还有化学反应系统中反应物的浓度不变、生态系统中两族共存的生物数量不变、经济系统中供应和需求不变等。在自动控制系统中通过反馈使原来不稳定的平衡态变为稳定的平衡态。如飞机的匀速直线飞行是平衡态，当实际航向偏离这个状态时，自动驾驶仪即对飞机产生控制使它回到平衡态。系统平衡态的稳定性通常依赖于系统的参量,当参量跨越某个临界值,平衡态的稳定性有变化，这个值称为分岔点。在工程设计中一般应使参量远离分岔点。但若系统失稳后仍有稳定的非平衡态，且变量的变化幅度又在许可范围之内，则参量的选择不受分岔点的限制。
