被评为国家地质公园的大渡河峡谷东西宽17公里，南北长26公里，最窄处仅20余米，最深处却有2675米，比世界第一大峡谷科罗拉多还深542米。进入峡谷的大渡河变成一条咆哮的巨龙，人在其间，头顶的火车隆隆驰过，脚下的河水发出闷雷般的拍岸轰鸣，上下的声响撞击让整个峡谷都震动了起来。两岸绝壁千仞，宛如一部"地质天书"，记录了10多亿年来地壳的神秘演进。谷内还有"老苍"、"白熊"等人迹罕至的深沟。鸟声伴溪语，卵石叠翠峰，沟内不仅"月亮湾"、"情人谷"、"卧牛潭"、"石鼓瀑"让人叫绝，还盛藏五彩水晶奇石。世代居住在峡谷深处的人们，至今还依靠跨江的溜索、垂直的天梯与外界接触，峡谷内许多胜景也就因此至今还鲜为人知。六十年代，成昆铁路穿峡而过，由"天下第一柱"支撑54米长的"一线天"铁路大跨空腹石桥和入口的"天下第一柱"被联合国"克隆"珍藏。2002年，峡谷入口处装机容量为330万千瓦的瀑布沟电站前期工程已经启动，84平方公里的西南最大人工湖即将展现在世人面前。厚重的历史、神秘的景观、大气派的动作，十分令人惊叹。奇景、奇石、奇花形成了"峡谷三奇"。
