In the past, Niggli's cell could be used to obtain indirectly the type of Bragg's lattice to which the unknown crystal lattice belongs by crystal lattice pattern, but this new method is different from Niggli's, in that, it can directly and conveniently get the same result, and also a new term, coordination shape, is coined in this article.

The designed and synthesized protonated ligands, N,N,N\',N\'-tetra-(p-methylbenzyl)ethylenedia-mine (SL1) and N,N,N\',N\'-tetra-benzylethylenediamine (SL2), are both the N-bidentate ligands with the bulky substituent groups, and can form the channel between layers with the directional group [CuCl4]2- through the second-sphere coordination.
