严中平著。原名《中国棉业之发展》,于1942年刊行初版,1955年经修订改用现名,并加副题"1289～1937──从棉纺织工业史看中国资本主义的发生与发展过程"。全书叙述从元至元二十六年(1289)元世祖设立"木绵提举司","责民岁输木绵十万匹"的实物贡赋制度起,到1937年抗日战争开始的中国棉纺织业发展史，特别着重分析鸦片战争后的发展。这是中国第一本系统地论述棉纺织业发展史的专著，内容丰富，收集和保存了不少珍贵的史料。全书共9章,著者把中国棉纺织业的发展史概括为三个历史时期：①鸦片战争前中国手工棉纺织业的发展(1289～1840);②中国手工棉纺织业的解体(1840～1890);③中国近代棉纺织业资本主义生产的发生和发展。第3个时期是全书的重点,共分6章加以详述。正如作者在导言中所述："本书企图以棉纺织业的发展历史做典型，分析百年来中国资本主义发生发展过程的特殊性。"著者根据大量的中国古代和近代的棉纺织业的史料以及产业革命后其他国家的棉纺织工业发展史料，运用马列主义和毛泽东思想来分析中国近代棉纺织业资本主义生产的发生与发展的过程，从一个侧面揭示了中国社会的近代发展史。书中提供了大量有关中国手工棉纺织技术传布、棉纺织机具革新的资料和世界近代大机器生产的棉纺织技术的发展及其在中国的传布与中国棉纺织工业的创立、发展的资料。这部书不仅对研究中国近代经济史和棉纺织工业史，而且对研究中国棉纺织技术史也有参考价值。
