    工作面积很小的电极。电极面积大小的界限并不十分严格。微电极包括两种涵义:①指电极的微型化。如微型化离子选择性电极,用于直接观察体液甚至细胞内某些重要离子的活度变化。玻璃毛细管(尖端内径在百万分之一米以下)电极,在微操纵仪控制下,安置在细胞表面附近或插入细胞内以观察单个细胞的电活动。在医学上微电极是研究细胞的一种工具。②指在电化学分析中电极面积很小但整个电极并非微型化的一类电极。如极谱法和伏安法中用的指示电极、滴汞电极、悬汞电极,库仑滴定中的指示电极、微铂电极等也称为微电极  。这类电极由于电极面积极小  ,电流密度很大,容易发生浓差极化。
