形态特征:苋科青葙属一年生草本植物，高30-80厘米。全株无毛。茎直立，粗壮，稀分枝，近上部扁平绿色或近红色。单叶互生具柄，叶片长椭圆形至卵状披针形，长5-13厘米，宽2-6厘米。夏秋季开花，穗状花序扁平，顶生，宛如鸡冠状，中部以下多花，颜色多变，淡红色至紫红色，黄色或白色。果卵形长约3毫米，熟时盖裂，包于宿存花被内。
生境分布:喜炎热而干燥土壤，原产亚洲热带，全国各地均有栽培。
用途:优良庭园观赏花卉。花和种子药用，有清热凉血、止痢、止带作用。
