   含有硫和氮的酸性化合物、pH值小于5.6的雨 、雪和雾。正名为酸沉降。其来源主要是矿物燃料如煤、石油燃烧或某些工业生产释放的SO2和NOx排入大气中  经历化学反应而形成硫酸或硝酸  随降水降落地面 。大气中的NH3虽然为碱性气体,但是进入土壤亦起酸的作用。20世纪60年代,瑞典学者首先发现湖泊中鱼类减少或绝迹,成为死湖;其后,欧美一些国家和中国也发现森林衰亡、材料腐蚀和古石雕破坏 。这些主要是由酸雨造成的 。气态的SO2和NOx寿命在一周左右,它们随气流飘移上百、上千米,到达清洁无污染区,即能造成生态破坏。酸雨抑制土壤中有机物的分解和氮固定,淋洗与土壤粒子结合的钙   、钾等营养元素 ,使土壤贫瘠化。酸雨通过土壤,造成地下水和地面水酸化,使饮用水含有害物质,影响人类健康。为制止酸雨的发展和消除此环境污染现象,必须设法减少SO2NOx排放量。
