| 酸雨 acid rain 含有硫和氮的酸性化合物、pH值小于5.6的雨 、雪和雾。正名为酸沉降。其来源主要是矿物燃料如煤、石油燃烧或某些工业生产释放的SO2和NOx排入大气中 ， 经历化学反应而形成硫酸或硝酸 ， 随降水降落地面 。大气中的NH3虽然为碱性气体，但是进入土壤亦起酸的作用。20世纪60年代，瑞典学者首先发现湖泊中鱼类减少或绝迹，成为死湖；其后，欧美一些国家和中国也发现森林衰亡、材料腐蚀和古石雕破坏 。这些主要是由酸雨造成的 。气态的SO2和NOx寿命在一周左右，它们随气流飘移上百、上千米，到达清洁无污染区，即能造成生态破坏。酸雨抑制土壤中有机物的分解和氮固定，淋洗与土壤粒子结合的钙 、 镁 、钾等营养元素 ，使土壤贫瘠化。酸雨通过土壤，造成地下水和地面水酸化，使饮用水含有害物质，影响人类健康。为制止酸雨的发展和消除此环境污染现象，必须设法减少SO2和NOx排放量。
