篦箕巷位于城西古运河北岸，从明朝正德十四年起（1519年），毗陵驿即设于此。毗陵驿是古时供传递公文的差役和官员途径本地时歇宿、换马的住所。清乾隆年间，毗陵驿也被称为皇华馆。接官亭叫做皇华亭，亭前的码头叫做大码头，现在可看到大码头牌坊、皇华亭，亭内的毗陵驿石碑以及古运河畔的大码头。据史料记载，乾隆南巡经常州时，有二次就是从这个大码头登岸进城的。
篦箕巷原名花市街，古时巷内鳞次栉比的梳篦店兼售宫花。
由于篦箕巷古时候一到晚上家家店里挂着宫灯，个个工场悬着照灯，常常彻夜不灭。晶莹闪闪的灯彩映在运河水里，与岸边船上灯火相映交辉，站在文亨桥上远远看去，宛如金色游龙，一片锦绣迷人的景象，这被称为常州西郊八景之一--"篦梁灯火"。
