表征系统内部结构不同等级的范畴。任何系统内部都具有不同结构水平的部分，如物体可分为分子、原子、原子核、"基本粒子"等若干层次；高级生命体可分为系统、器官、组织、细胞、生物大分子等若干层次。层次从属于结构，依赖结构而存在。系统内部处于同一结构水平上的诸要素，互相联结成一个层次，而不同的层次则代表不同的结构等级。层次依赖于结构，结构不能脱离层次，没有也不可能有无层次的结构。
