“六月杨梅，城西烂紫霞。”每年的夏至关后，宁波的慈溪南部的群山翠岭上沉甸甸的杨梅挂满树梢，凝翠流丹，给人们带来好看、好吃、好玩、好心情。
数千年来文人墨客为之吟诗作文，这杨梅山有着深厚的杨梅论。这闻名于世的杨梅，吸引着无数海内外客人，热情的慈溪人民也喜欢用杨梅来馈赠亲友，款待宾客。
当地政府则以杨梅这一口感好，能健身，人人喜爱又能传递感情的果品，做杨梅文化与发展经济相结合的文章，于1989年6月，慈溪市人大常委会决定：每年的6月28日为慈溪杨梅节。余姚市也出于同样的目的，举办一年一度的杨梅节。
杨梅节举行丰富多彩的活动，以杨梅为媒介，开展各界联谊、信息交流、开拓经贸，带动杨梅产品的迅速流通，促进旅游经济的发展。杨梅节使这小小的杨梅发挥大作用。
