阿拉伯阿拔斯王朝诗人。生于伊拉克安巴尔，在库法长大。出身贫苦，青少年时期刻苦学习。后去巴格达，成为宫廷诗人。年轻时爱上麦赫迪王后的随身侍女欧特白，曾遭监禁。但他仍对欧特白留恋不舍，常赋诗抒情，哈里发麦赫迪说他"简直是个白痴",于是他以艾布??阿塔希叶的绰号而闻名。他具有阿拉伯、波斯古代文化的丰富知识,精通希腊哲学,熟悉各宗教的基本教义和各经院学派的观点,并深受摩尼教善恶二元论教义的影响,但他认为造物主创造了善与恶这两个相对立的实质，调和了摩尼教二元论和伊斯兰教一神论的基本矛盾。796年前后,他放弃奢移、放纵的生活,成为禁欲的苦行僧。早期作品主要是颂诗、情诗、饮酒诗和悼诗，但大量的是劝世诗。劝世诗反映了他的思想、生活的变化，同时也反映了阿拔斯朝的社会状况和社会矛盾。他所代表的苦修派诗人虽然基本上也是御用文人，但他们的劝世诗客观上反映了下层人民的痛苦和希望，引起人民的共鸣。
