   按一定方式配植在城乡道路两旁的乔木或灌木。又称荫道树、路树。其功能在于为行人创造良好的小气候条件,使路面、广场、住宅和公共建筑物等不受过烈的阳光照射和调节温、湿度;消烟、滞尘、防风、净化空气和减少噪声,以及美化市容、为路景增色、保护道路和战备防护等。
   适宜作行道树的树种,要求抗性强,能适应街道的特殊环境,尤耐瘠薄而干燥的土壤,大苗定植后易于成活;病虫害少;花、叶无毒、无恶臭;落果少,无毛絮飞扬;主干挺直,树冠整齐;耐修剪;树大荫浓;寿命长。落叶树种还要求发芽早,落叶迟且较整齐。材质优良,或可提供鲜花、药材或干、鲜果等副产品的树种尤佳。中国常用树种主要有:波罗蜜、臭椿、木麻黄、樟树、梧桐、银杏、槐、加拿大杨等。
   栽植前须对道路、土壤、路旁建筑物、地下和架空管线,以及交通等状况进行调查。行道树的配置方式,一般是在车行道与步道之间栽植1~2行乔木树种,或在株间、行间夹栽一些灌木;也可将成组或成行的灌木丛与草花以及草坪、地被植物等穿插配置,构成林荫道或园林路的形式。
   树苗栽植可分春植、秋植和雨季栽植3个时期。干燥季节和冬季临封冻前必须充分灌溉,并要适时采取修剪整形、补植、更新、防治病虫害以及防风等措施。
