%26#8220;温州模式%26#8221;这一概念，最早来自1985年5月12日《解放日报》刊登的题为《乡镇企业看苏南，家庭工业看浙南，温州三十三万人从事家庭工业》的文章，和同时发表的题为《温州的启示》的评论文章。专家认为：%26#8220;温州模式%26#8221;是在农村实行联产承包责任制的基础上，以个体私营经济为主要内容，以家庭和联户经营的民办工业和专业市场、农民购销员和民间信贷相结合为特点的发展农村商品经济的致富之路，也是一种以家庭为基础、以市场为导向、以小城镇为依托、以农村能人为骨干的一种新型家庭经济和市场体系相结合的农村社会经济发展模式。
当年的小手工作坊制造曾创造了发展的奇迹，成为浙江乃至全国争相学习和效仿的新经济模式。直到1994年股份合作制在中国得到确认和推广，温州经济模式一直%26#8220;领先国内%26#8221;。
还有专家认为，温州模式最重要和最宝贵的在于它的基本精神，也就是温州人的独特文化。温州模式的基本精神有三点。一是强烈的致富欲望和创业精神；二是不断追求、永不满足；三是异常勤劳，敢冒风险，勇闯天下，努力学习本领，善于适应环境。而这也是后来的浙商们的共同特点。
