在 20 世纪八十年代，材料物理学家张弋飞在世界上首先发现，固体硫蒸气产生辉光放电的效应，该效应使金属零件在低温下形成固体润滑层—渗硫层。 这就是著名的“低温离子渗硫”，它的全称是金属表面形成硫化物层的方法和设备，获得了 中、英、德、法、瑞、意、日等多国专利。
至1997年底，低温离子渗硫专利普通许可21家企业生产，取得广泛的经济效益和社会效益。
国内一些企业和科研单位声称开发出“离子渗硫”、“离子硫化”、“真空等离子渗硫”，或称“国外引进”；三家企业被北京市中院判决侵权，一家被宣告实用新型专利无效；见侵权维权
实际上，离子渗硫只有一个能达到120微米渗层深度发明专利，，即“金属表面形成硫化物层的方法和设备”专利。
