湖北省第3大湖。岗边湖。位于省境中南部,跨荆门、江陵、潜江3市县。积水面积2265平方公里。 湖底海拔28米,是长江、汉江间地势最高的湖泊。水位30.5米时,湖泊面积122.5平方公里,容积2.71亿立方米。水温随季节变化,年温差24℃左右,无冰冻。湖水雨季透明度1.2米,一般约2米,属碳酸盐性软水。浮游生物生长旺盛,鱼类品种约20种,鲭、鲢、鲩、鳢等较常见。历来上接沮漳河水,下以内荆河为出水道,且与长江、汉江间诸湖相通,于洪湖县新滩口汇入长江;现为四湖总干渠渠首,具蓄洪、灌溉、养殖、航运之利。
