化学成分为 (Fe,Ni)9S8、晶体属等轴晶系的硫化物矿物。英文名来源于第一个注意到该矿物的爱尔兰学者J.B.彭特兰(J.B.Pentland)的姓氏。镍黄铁矿呈古铜黄色，条痕黑绿色，金属光泽，具完全的八面体解理，摩斯硬度3.5～4，比重5.0。通常呈细粒状,主要产于基性岩浆岩内的铜镍硫化物矿床中，与磁黄铁矿、黄铜矿密切共生。当成分中铁和镍的比值为1时,含镍量为34.22%，并经常含钴。是提炼镍的最主要矿物原料，世界上90％的镍是从镍黄铁矿中提取的。加拿大安大略的萨德伯里是世界上著名产地。中国甘肃金川、吉林盘石也是镍黄铁矿的主要产地。
