化学成分为 Fe1-xS，有不同的类型，分别属于六方或单斜晶系的硫化物矿物。化学式中的x值通常为0.1～0.2；如x值为0，即与陨硫铁(FeS)相同。磁黄铁矿呈带红色色调的暗青铜黄色，金属光泽。摩斯硬度 4，比重4.6～4.7。具强磁性。通常呈致密块状产于多种金属矿床中,但主要富集于铜镍硫化物矿床中,与镍黄铁矿、黄铜矿共生。磁黄铁矿在地表易风化成褐铁矿。其成分中含硫量为39～40％，可用于制作硫酸。当成分中含镍高时，可作为镍矿石利用。中国甘肃金川、吉林盘石等铜镍硫化物矿床中均富产磁黄铁矿，世界上最著名的产地是加拿大安大略的萨德伯里。
