用氧化剂或还原剂去除水中有害物质的方法。例如，用氯、臭氧或二氧化氯氧化有机物（包括酚）；用空气或氯将低价铁、锰氧化为高价铁、锰，使从水中析出。又如在废水处理中用氯或漂白粉氧化氰根；用硫酸亚铁、二氧化硫或亚硫酸钠使铬酸根中的六价铬还原为三价铬，再用石灰使其沉淀。氧化还原法多数可用电解法替代。例如，电解法既可用于处理含氰废水，也可用于处理含铬酸根的废水。在氢氧根和水分子的参与下，在阳极氰根可氧化为二氧化碳、氮和氰酸根。
