甘肃省河西走廊第3大河,古名谷水。干流上游杂木河，源于祁连山脉东段冷龙岭北侧的大雪山，东北流于山谷,坡陡流急,杂木寺平水年年均流量7.90立方米／秒，年均径流量2.49亿立方米。自塔儿庄出山，入河西走廊东段为中游，过武威接纳冲积扇缘泉水复向东北，名石羊大河。红崖山以北为下游，原分为大东、大西2河,现筑成东西干渠，继续东北行，最后没入民勤县东镇以北的沙漠中。河全长250公里。全水系自东而西,主要支流有大景(靖)河、古浪河、黄羊河、金塔河、西营河、东大河及西大河（下游名金川河）等，均源出祁连山东段，河系以雨水补给为主，兼有冰雪融水成分，出山口多年平均流量50.5立方米／秒，年径流量15.91亿立方米，6～9月占70％左右。上游祁连山区降水丰富,有64.8平方公里冰川和残留林木，是河流的水源补给地。前山皇城滩是优良牧场，中游流经走廊平地，形成武威和永昌诸绿洲，灌溉农业发达。下游是民勤绿洲。终端湖如白亭海及青土湖等近期均已消失。全流域建成 100万立方米以上水库15座，其中以大景峡、黄羊河、南营、西马湖、红崖山及金川峡等水库较大。
