甘肃省河西走廊第3大河,古名谷水。干流上游杂木河,源于祁连山脉东段冷龙岭北侧的大雪山,东北流于山谷,坡陡流急,杂木寺平水年年均流量7.90立方米/秒,年均径流量2.49亿立方米。自塔儿庄出山,入河西走廊东段为中游,过武威接纳冲积扇缘泉水复向东北,名石羊大河。红崖山以北为下游,原分为大东、大西2河,现筑成东西干渠,继续东北行,最后没入民勤县东镇以北的沙漠中。河全长250公里。全水系自东而西,主要支流有大景(靖)河、古浪河、黄羊河、金塔河、西营河、东大河及西大河(下游名金川河)等,均源出祁连山东段,河系以雨水补给为主,兼有冰雪融水成分,出山口多年平均流量50.5立方米/秒,年径流量15.91亿立方米,6~9月占70%左右。上游祁连山区降水丰富,有64.8平方公里冰川和残留林木,是河流的水源补给地。前山皇城滩是优良牧场,中游流经走廊平地,形成武威和永昌诸绿洲,灌溉农业发达。下游是民勤绿洲。终端湖如白亭海及青土湖等近期均已消失。全流域建成 100万立方米以上水库15座,其中以大景峡、黄羊河、南营、西马湖、红崖山及金川峡等水库较大。
