冯荒，原名刘北汜，吉林延吉人。中共党员、民盟成员。1943年毕业于昆明西南联合大学历史系。历任昆明峨嵋中学、云大附中、中山高级工业职校教员，上海《大公报》编辑、副刊编辑室主任、朝鲜战地特派记者，故宫博物院《紫禁城》杂志主编、研究室主任，紫禁城出版社社长，中央文史研究馆馆员，编审。北京史研究会副会长，中国古都学会第二届理事，中国俗文学学会副会长，民盟中央文化委员会委员，《中国文物报》特约编审等。1938年开始发表作品。1982年加入中国作家协会。
