参与发酵石油及其产物生产轻工、化工原料的微生物。1916年，泽恩发现细菌能以天然气为碳源。1940年以后发现烃代谢过程中的一些中间产物，并利用硫酸还原菌进行原油脱硫等的研究。1960年以后开始研究石油脱蜡、发酵石油生产单细胞蛋白等。目前，达到或接近工业化生产的烃发酵有：通过石油脱蜡微生物的发酵将石油中的蜡分解,降低石油的凝固点,以满足高寒地区和特殊工业的需要。中国已用解脂假丝酵母发酵原油，能使凝固点从5℃下降到-34℃。用嗜油毕赤酵母发酵轻重混合油,可使凝固点低到-50℃。用脱蜡球拟酵母C7发酵300～400℃的石油馏分,可使凝固点下降到-60℃。用热带假丝酵母发酵石油烃，可生产出含蛋白质丰富的单细胞石油蛋白，用做饲料的添加剂。另外，可用假单胞菌、诺卡氏菌、假丝酵母、棒状杆菌等发酵烃生产有机酸(见有机酸发酵微生物)、维生素（见维生素发酵微生物）和多糖（见产多糖微生物）等。
