能自动辨别被测长度合格与否或能自动分选的长度计量技术。自动测量可以只测量一个参数，也可以同时或连续不断地测量一个工件的多个参数，有主动测量和线外自动测量两种。线外自动测量是指测量结果的信息不直接用于控制加工的测量，例如用自动分选机、自动检验机和多尺寸检验装置测量已加工完毕的工件。自动分选机用于测量配合精度高、需要把公差带（见公差）分成若干尺寸组进行选配的工件。自动分选机的基本工序(见图)都是自动的。料斗中的工件由送进机构送入测量位置后，由长度传感器将被测尺寸转换为电信号，经分组线路处理后控制执行机构进行分选和剔除废品。自动检验机用于检验成品工件的尺寸、形状和位置误差等。它能将被测工件分为合格品、可修品和废品 3组。多尺寸检验装置和自动检验机的用途基本相同，但前者的装、卸工件是手动的，结构也较简单；而后者的基本工序一般都是自动的。
