能自动辨别被测长度合格与否或能自动分选的长度计量技术。自动测量可以只测量一个参数﹐也可以同时或连续不断地测量一个工件的多个参数﹐有主动测量和线外自动测量两种。线外自动测量是指测量结果的信息不直接用於控制加工的测量﹐例如用自动分选机﹑自动检验机和多尺寸检验装置测量已加工完毕的工件。自动分选机用於测量配合精度高﹑需要把公差带(见公差)分成若干尺寸组进行选配的工件。自动分选机的基本工序(见图 自动分选工作原理 )
都是自动的。料斗中的工件由送进机构送入测量位置后﹐由长度传感器将被测尺寸转换为电信号﹐经分组线路处理后控制执行机构进行分选和剔除废品。自动检验机用於检验成品工件的尺寸﹑形状和位置误差等。它能将被测工件分为合格品﹑可修品和废品 3组。多尺寸检验装置和自动检验机的用途基本相同﹐但前者的装﹑卸工件是手动的﹐结构也较简单﹔而后者的基本工序一般都是自动的。
