BaCO3 一种重要的钡化合物,由重晶石化学加工制得。白色粉末，有斜方、六方、立方三种晶系。由于制备的工艺条件不同，得到的产品的松密度也不同，一般为0.80～2.11g/cm3，颗粒尺寸为0.1～10μm。热稳定性好，在1400℃、约0.1MPa下分解，1740℃时即熔融。几乎不溶于水，当有碳酸或铵盐存在时及在硫酸钠、硫酸镁、硫酸锌、硝酸钙、氯化钙、碳酸钾、氯化镁等浓溶液中时，其溶解度增大。
碳酸钡是制备渗碳剂的组分，用于在高温下钢制件的渗碳（表面硬化）。在电子管制造中用做阴极屏蔽剂。还用做杀鼠剂。此外，也用于制造陶瓷、光学玻璃、搪瓷等。
