化学式NO2。红棕色气体，有刺激性特殊臭味;有毒；相对密度 1.4494(20/4℃)，沸点21.2℃，-11.2℃时凝固成无色晶体；分子为∨形结构，键角132±2°。二氧化氮易被压缩成红棕色液体，冷却时液体颜色逐渐变淡，最终成为无色。这是由于气体在冷却时二聚成无色的四氧化二氮的缘故。低于0℃几乎完全二聚，至140℃即全部分解为NO2，超过150℃即发生热分解,至620℃完全分解:

二氧化氮溶于水，生成硝酸和一氧化氮：
3NO2+H2O─→2HNO3+NO生成的一氧化氮遇空气迅速氧化为二氧化氮，溶于浓硝酸即生成发烟硝酸。
