关于信息不完全或不确定的系统的控制理论，是中国邓聚龙教授于1979年提出来的。灰色系统理论将系统分为两类:①本征灰色系统。这类系统没有物理原型,运行机制不明确，例如人文、经济、生态、农业、市场等系统。②一般灰色系统。这类系统有物理原型，但信息不完全，如工业控制系统。灰色系统理论强调信息的处理、生成和利用。基于信息利用和不断补充的思想，灰色系统可以白化（明确）；基于信息生成的思想，对众多的白化客体可以作认识论层次的升华，即白情况也可以灰化。基于信息的可补充性和认识的可深化性，灰色系统的任何结果都带有阶段性、局部性。阶段性和局部性必然导致解的非唯一性、集类的开性、结果的拓扑性和可构造性。将原始数据累加生成可获得灰指数（区间性的）函数。基于这类函数可定义微分方程的背景值和平射性，有限与无限的相对性，并可定义指标拓扑空间的导数（即灰导数），从而可建立功能较强的微分方程模型。灰色系统理论的研究内容包括：系统分析、数据生成、建模、预测、决策和控制，已应用到军事、经济、工业、农业、生态、气象、地震、教育等方面。
