由煤低温干馏所得的可燃固体产物。产率约为原料煤的50%~70%。色黑多孔,主要成分是碳、灰分和挥发分。其灰分含量取决于原料煤质,挥发分含量约5%~20%(质量)。与焦炭相比,挥发分含量高,孔隙率大而机械强度低。与一氧化碳、蒸汽或氧具有较强的反应活性。是很好的高热值无烟燃料,主要用作工业或民用燃料,也用于合成气、电石生产等,少量用作铜矿或磷矿等冶炼时的还原剂,此外也用作炼焦配煤。
