1937年美国人J.F.海德首先制成浸涂电绝缘用玻璃布的有机硅树脂。1943年美国陶－康宁公司建成甲基苯基硅树脂中间试验工厂，1945年实现了工业化生产。
有机硅树脂的工业生产通常以甲基三氯硅烷、苯基三氯硅烷等为主要原料。为了降低树脂的脆性、硬度，提高树脂粘着性，可加入二甲基二氯硅烷、甲基苯基二氯硅烷等二官能度单体。上述单体在溶剂中水解、缩聚，洗除副产氯化氢，得到尚含少量硅羟基的树脂液。使用时要加入少量如环烷酸钴等催化剂，使树脂进一步缩聚完全，得到交联的三维网状固化树脂。水解过程中的加料速度、反应温度、搅拌强度等，对树脂性能都有影响。（见甲基氯硅烷、苯基氯硅烷）
