   粘土岩的一种。成分复杂,除粘土矿物(如高岭石、蒙脱石、水云母、拜来石等)外,还含有许多碎屑矿物(如石英、长石、云母等)和自生矿物(如铁、铝、锰的氧化物与氢氧化物等)。具页状或薄片状层理。用硬物击打易裂成碎片。是由粘土物质经压实作用、脱水作用、重结晶作用后形成。常见类型有:①黑色页岩。含较多的有机质。②碳质页岩。含有大量已碳化的有机质,常见于煤系地层的顶底板。③油页岩。含一定数量的沥青,黑棕色,浅黄褐色等,层理发育,燃烧有沥青味。④硅质页岩。含有较多的玉髓、蛋白石等。⑤铁质页岩。含少量铁的氧化物、氢氧化物等。多呈红色或灰绿色。在红层和煤系地层中较常见。
