    一种化学元素。化学符号 Mn  , 原子序数 25 ,原子量54.93805,属周期系ⅦB族。1774年瑞典C.W.舍勒在从软锰矿制得氯气时,确定该矿中含有一种新的元素。同年,瑞典J.G.甘恩用炭还原软锰矿,制得了金属锰,因为软锰矿具有磁性,故以希腊文magnes( 含义是“磁石” )命名 。锰在地壳中的含量为0.085% ,锰的矿物主要有软锰矿(MnO2)、硬锰矿(mMnO·MnO2·nH2O) 、水锰矿( Mn2O3·H2O) 、褐锰矿(Mn2O3)、黑锰矿(Mn3O4)、菱锰矿(MnCO3 )  、蔷薇辉石(MnO·SiO2)。由于锰和铁、钴、镍的性质相似  ,所以铁矿中也常含有锰。蕴藏在海底的锰结核是锰、镍、钴的复合矿物,含锰量为15%~30%,据估计,在整个海底,锰结核约有 1.5万亿吨。
    锰是钢灰色有光泽的金属,性脆,熔点 1244℃ ,沸点1962℃,密度7.20克/厘米3。锰是比较活泼的金属 ,在空气中比较容易被氧化,形成褐色的层状氧化物覆盖物,最靠近金属的是MnO,外层是Mn3O4。锰在加热时燃烧,生成Mn3O4。在加热时,锰与氟、氯、溴作用,生成相应的卤化物。在赤热下,与硫反应生成MnS。在1200℃以上,氮与锰反应 ,生成Mn5N2。熔融的金属锰能溶解碳,生成Mn3C。锰能与冷水作用:
    Mn+2H2O!!!M0840_1Mn(OH)2+H2锰易溶于稀酸,溶于盐酸放出氢,溶于浓硫酸放出二氧化硫,溶于硝酸放出一氧化氮。锰的氧化态为-1、-3、+1、+2、+3、+4、+5、+6、+7。+2 价锰盐和+7价高锰酸盐在溶液中比其他价态稳定。+2 价的氧化锰是碱性的 ,不溶于水,溶于酸生成+2价锰盐。锰一共能生成6种氧化物 :MnO、Mn3O4、Mn2O3、MnO2、MnO3、Mn2O7 。 在低温和不见光的条件下,二氧化锰与浓盐酸作用,可生成 + 4价锰盐,但在稀释或受热时即转化为氯和二氯化锰 。+6 价的锰酸盐只存在于碱性溶液中,酸化后即发生歧化反应,生成高锰酸盐和二价锰盐。
    金属锰的生产方法有:① 铝热法 。用金属铝做还原剂,将Mn3O4还原为金属锰。②电热法。在电炉中用木炭还原富锰渣。③电解法。用不锈钢做阴极,铅板做阳极,硫酸锰溶液为电解质,可得纯度为99.9%的金属锰。锰是脆性金属,不能做结构材料,但钢中加锰后能起细化结晶组织的作用,并因形成碳化物而提高强度,锰钢可用于结构钢、钢轨和弹簧钢。锰还是炼钢时的去氧剂和脱硫剂。锰是动植物机体的微量组分,某些锰盐可做微量元素化肥和动物饲料添加剂。二氧化锰用于生产干电池和玻璃、陶瓷工业。
