An exhibition of street art by French artist Julien Malland, also commonly known as Seth, opened at M Art Center in Shanghai on March 9.
Called A l’écolebuissonnière, the exhibition features a collection of Malland’s works that can be found in the streets of one of the last working-class neighborhoods in central Shanghai.
“Throughout my childhood, I dreamedabout escaping to China, up until 1999 when I went there for the first time. I would return many times thereafter, for personal and artistic projects because China, and especially Shanghai, became more than just an exotic destination - it became one of my main sources of inspiration,” said Malland.
“This exhibition represents my dream of China, intimately linked to childhood and a universal need to escape in a world that is increasingly incomprehensible.”
Born in Paris in 1972, Malland rose to fame in Shanghai with his paintings of children on the walls in different parts of the city.
He started painting on walls in the mid-1990s and has since 2003 been touring the world to interact with street artists from different cultures.
