Beijing, China’s capital, revealed construction progress for the Beijing Daxing International Airport on Friday, which is currently at the interior decoration stage. The airport is scheduled to start running by the middle of next year.
Located on the border of Beijing and Langfang, Hebei province, the new airport is Beijing’s second international airport and positioned to be a major international hub.
“We have adopted natural light in the terminal interior design as much as possible and innovated in construction of integrated transportation,” Zhang Ru, representative of the project headquarters, said on Friday.
She said the project includes five vertical and two horizontal integrated transportation networks, which will combine highways, inter-city railways, high speed railway and subways with the airport at the center.
With four runways and a 700,000 square meter terminal area, the airport is expected to be the world’s largest upon completion.
The new airport is 46 kilometers from Tian’anmen Square, 26 km from downtown Langfang city in Hebei, 55 km from the Xiong’an New Area, and 67 km from the existing Beijing Capital International Airport, and is expected to serve as the airport hub for North China.
The first phase of the project is designed with an initial target of 72 million passengers, 20 million tons of cargo and mail, and 620,000 aircraft routes by 2025, with plans to handle 100 million passengers in the long term.
