EU discuss destruction of Syria's chemical stockpiles
2013-11-19 (Xinhua)   2013-11-19 11:17:28

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- European Union foreign ministers have held a formal meeting in Brussels to discuss a wide range of international issues.

At a press conference after the meeting, EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said foreign ministers from the 28-nation bloc talked about Iran’s nuclear program and the impact of the worsening humanitarian situation in Syria. She called on relevant nations to make the proposed peace talks for Syria, Geneva II, a reality.

Meanwhile, the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles continues to hang in the balance as no EU nation is agreeing to host the destruction of the stockpile. Many have instead called for the arsenal to be eradicated close to Syria itself.

Belgium had been considered a strong candidate after the withdrawal of Albania, but the country has crossed out itself as a possible destination. And several other nations, including Germany and the Netherlands, have called for more financial support to take care of the destruction.
