Four killed in clashes during pro-Morsi demonstrations
2013-10-05 (Xinhua)   2013-10-05 11:09:09

BEIJING, Oct. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- At least four people have been killed in clashes between supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and security forces. According to a Health Ministry official, the four people were killed in the capital Cairo and 40 others were wounded nationwide on Friday.

Fighting broke out when Morsi’s supporters tried to converge on Tahrir Square. Police fired tear gas and locked down the Square and several other Cairo streets in an attempt to stop the protests.

All the way to Tahrir Square, the pro Morsi protesters’ chants against the military sparked clashes with civilians, believed to be supporters of the military. Members of the Brotherhood also tried to reach the presidential palace but were turned back by police.

The state news agency said protesters failed to reach the defence ministry and a Republican Guard facility. Fighting also erupted in Egypt’s second city Alexandria and two Nile Delta cities.
