UN investigation team to analyse evidence soon
2013-09-01 (Xinhua)   2013-09-01 10:07:40

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) --  A UN Spokesperson has briefed reporters about a UN investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria on Aug. 21.

Martin Nesirky said the investigation team will analyse their evidence as soon as possible, but he didn’t give a time frame of when the work would be completed. He also said that the UN rejected suggestions that the world body was somehow stepping aside to allow US air strikes on Syria.

The UN Spokesperson also said that more than 1,000 UN staff, who are on the ground in Syria will continue its humanitarian work in the conflict-ravaged country. Earlier, a plane carrying UN chemical weapons inspectors landed at Rotterdam airport in the Netherlands, after the team concluded their four-day probe in Syria to determine whether chemical weapons have been used.

The UN team spent three days touring stricken areas near Damascus and a fourth day interviewing patients at a government-run military hospital. The UN team left Syria on Saturday morning, crossing into neighboring Lebanon, before flying to the Netherlands.

The samples the inspectors brought with them will be distributed between various labs across Europe for testing. The UN has said it will try to expedite its final report on whether chemical weapons were used, but won’t make a judgement on who used them.
