6 dead as thousands of Morsi supporter protest across Egypt
2013-08-31 (Xinhua)   2013-08-31 09:24:43

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Thousands of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have marched through Cairo and other cities across Egypt to demand his reinstatement.

Although most marches passed without major incident, a security source said that at least 6 people were killed as police fired tear-gas at protesters in Cairo’s Mohandiseen district. Similar clashes also erupted in the coastal city of Alexandria, the Delta city of Mansoura and the Beheira governorate, leaving dozens of people injured. The security source said more than 20 had been arrested.

Egypt’s interim government issued a statement after the protests saying that anyone who disregarded the curfew would face legal consequences. The curfew, imposed on 14 governorates, starts from 9 pm to 6 am everyday except Friday. The government has shot dead hundreds of supporters of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood since he was toppled by the military on July 3.
