BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The five permanent members of the UN Security Council have finished a closed-door meeting on the UK’s draft resolution calling for action against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons. The UN diplomats did not comment following the meeting.
But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has told his British counterpart, William Hague, that the UN Security Council should not consider the draft resolution before UN inspectors report on their findings there.
British Prime Minister David Cameron had earlier submitted a draft resolution to the Security Council condemning suspected chemical attacks in Syria and demanding "all necessary measures" to protect civilians. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged the Council to unite for peace.
