BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have met in the West Bank city of Jericho, on the same day that a senior Palestinian official said the talks had been suspended.

The two negotiation teams met on Monday evening in the house of Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. Envoys from the United States were absent from the meeting. At the meeting, Erekat protested the killing of three Palestinians in Ramallah by Israeli soldiers.

Earlier on Monday, a Palestinian official had said that talks with Israel had been called off following deadly clashes in the West Bank. But the U.S. State Department issued a rebuttal saying that the two sides were still engaged in serious and sustained negotiations.

Violence had broken out when Israeli troops stormed a refugee camp in northern Ramallah as part of the military’s regular raids. The incident is the second of its kind since Israel and Palestine resumed their long-stalled peace talks in July.
