Cambodians protest over poll results
2013-08-27 (Xinhua)   2013-08-27 10:01:32

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- More than 10,000 people have rallied in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, calling for an investigation into alleged irregularities in the country’s latest election.

The peaceful gathering lasted for about two hours. At the rally, Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy said his party would not accept the final election results, which are expected to be announced on September 8th.

Rainsy has pledged massive protests around the country, unless an independent committee is established to assess the election process.

Official results for last month’s election gave Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Cambodian People Party 68 National Assembly seats, against 55 for Rainsy’s Cambodia National Rescue Party.

Rainsy said his party would have won 63 seats if the election was fair. He alleged that the voter registration process was flawed, and failed to properly list around more than one million people, who were therefore unable to vote.
